The “strange stone forest” of Haisenchulu in mainly formed through natrual weathering and aeolian deflation of the granite in Mesozoic, manifested as weathering niche(stone fossa) and mushroom rocks and other shapes. Because the strange shape of the weathering rocks, like the distribution of the forests ranging from high to low, therefore people called it “strange stone forest”.
Their formation process is as follow: the sunlight is strong in the desert, making the wall of the rock heated and the minerals of the rocks expanded; while at night, the temperature decreased sharply, the minerals contracted. Because the thermodynamic properties are different, the expansion and contraction of volume is different. Different minerals produced contrary force during contraction, togerher with the development of the rock joints and fracture, therefore, the minerals released each other, the rock surface weathering off. In addtion, the soluble salt in the rocks absorbed water and recrystallized, resulting in the expansion in volume and also made the surface of the rocks released. The weathering rock surface under the deflation of northwester wind, at first formed a number of small shallow pits, then the wind carrying the sand along the pits to make erosion, and finally formed the stone fossa, which appeared mainly in the windward side of the rock. While some isolated rocks received more erosion in the lower part than the upper part, the lower part got smaller and smaller and formed mushroom rocks.
